Experimental Type as Protest ✣ Book ⊹ Fall 2025

Experimental type as protest is a book made in collaboration with Micah Brekke. It exploring design’s social potential and value in society. Me and Micah saw manipulation of typography towards illegibility as a way for designers to advocate for their skills. We see producing Illegibility in letterforms as a way to separate design from its current function as a producer of manipulative, consumerist, profit motivated language. Illegibility also allows viewers to slow their consumption of the langage allowing them to better reason with what is presented to them.

"Fonts perhaps become more salient as they become the only thing that people are expected to play with when it comes to words, once it is drilled into everyone that it is required for efficiency and political conformity to let machines do all the writing and the editing and the “thinking”. We won’t have official authority to change what words mean on the page, but we’ll be encouraged to think that changing the way they look is really the best way to express ourselves." - Silvio Lorusso
